Baby names by region and nation

In 2025 the most popular names in England and Wales were Olivia and Muhammad, but the number ones were not the same everywhere: in every one of the 10 regions, the girls’ or boys’ number one (or both) was different. London differed most from the England and Wales top 10, with 9 names in its two top 10s that are not in the England and Wales ones. Scotland’s number ones were Freya and Noah, and Northern Ireland’s Grace and Noah. The number after each name is how many babies were given it. Where two names tie for first place, both are shown.

Why the four nations are shown separately

England and Wales (ONS) count babies born in the year. Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland (NISRA) count births registered in the year. Each office applies its own rules, so their lists are shown side by side and never added into one UK ranking. Within England and Wales, ONS publishes a top 10 for each of the nine English regions, a top 100 for Wales, and only the single most popular name for each local council.

All licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Babies born to mothers living outside England and Wales are counted in the England and Wales total but not in any region. Exact spellings are counted separately.
